Nationwide Numerical Reasoning Tests

The Nationwide numerical reasoning tests assess your ability to extract information from graphs, charts, and tables and perform fundamental mathematical calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, ratios, proportions, and averages. They are designed to measure a candidate’s ability to perform arithmetic problems with speed, accuracy and attention to detail. The test only applies to those applying to their finance schemes so check if this applies to you, although there may also be aspects of numerical reasoning within the Nationwide Cognitive Ability Test. For these relevant roles, the skills displayed in a numerical reasoning test are essential for success and so plenty of practise is needed to give yourself the best chance.  The SOVA supplied tests can vary in length but usually have a 15-30 minute time limit. The cognitive ability test has no time limit but candidates are scored on their speed and accuracy for each question.

Familiarise yourself with the test format and practising similar questions to build confidence and improve speed. Focus on core mathematical concepts such as percentages, ratios, averages, and interpreting data from charts and graphs. Consistent practice and a strategic approach are key to achieving a strong performance.

Nationwide Application Process

Stage 1 - Online Application Form

The Nationwide application process begins with completing an application form on the Nationwide Careers website. Applicants are asked to submit details such as personal information, educational history and a CV. Throughout the application, Nationwide are looking for evidence of relevant skills and examples of how these have been demonstrated in past experiences.

Stage 2 - Online Tests

The next stage of the Nationwide hiring process involves completing online tests. Candidates will undertake a range of assessments tailored to the role they have applied for. These tests are provided by SOVA and include:

  • Numerical Reasoning Tests
  • Verbal Reasoning Tests
  • Logical Reasoning Tests
  • Situational Judgement Tests

There will also be a further personality questionnaire which evaluates your behavioural tendencies and helps them understand who you are and what your workplace behaviour will be like. Note that the numerical reasoning test only applies to those who have applied to one of their finance schemes.

Stage 3 - Video Assessment

This is a short video assessment where Nationwide try to understand who you are and get to know you and your experiences better.

Stage 4 - Final Assessment

The final stage of the Nationwide application process is an invite to the Nationwide Final Assessment. This will be a live virtual assessment which may include an online group activity and a virtual interview. Nationwide will let you know the competencies you are being assessed against in their ‘invite to interview’ documents so be sure to learn these.

Nationwide Verbal Reasoning Tests

Nationwide verbal reasoning tests aim to assess how well an applicant can interpret information from a given extract of text. Candidate’s are expected to be able to analyse texts and infer information to answer questions about the text even if the answer isn’t directly stated in the text itself. Good performance in a verbal reasoning test indicates strong verbal and communication skills which are essential for many roles at Nationwide. This will form part of the Nationwide Cognitive Ability Test and isn’t its own standalone test. Preparation is essential for a strong result in the Nationwide Psychometric Tests as you need to be able to feel comfortable answering different questions of varying content in a single sitting. There is no time limit on the cognitive ability test however you are scored on how many correct answers you get as well as how long it took to answer each question.

Nationwide Logical Reasoning Tests

Nationwide logical reasoning tests are presented in the form of the Nationwide Cognitive Ability Test. It is meant to assess cognitive traits that are critical in the workplace. These tests, provided by SOVA, often involve analysing sequences, completing patterns, and drawing logical conclusions from the provided information. Designed to evaluate problem-solving abilities, they challenge candidates to interpret abstract and complex data within a strict time limit. Again it is important to be prepared to answer different questions of varying content in a single sitting in order to get a strong result. There is no time limit on the cognitive ability test however you are scored on how many correct answers you get as well as how long it took to answer each question.

Nationwide Situational Judgement Tests

The Nationwide situational judgement tests present candidates with workplace scenarios to assess their decision-making, problem-solving, and alignment with the company’s core values. Candidates are required to choose the best course of action for each scenario, making it essential to understand and reflect these values in their responses. These tests evaluate how well an applicant’s behaviour aligns with the company’s expectations and helps them learn how you make decisions at work. The Nationwide situational judgement test, supplied by SOVA, typically lasts around 25-30 minutes but doesn’t have a time limit.
